COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:
What is Medical Coding?
Medical coding is the process of assigning alphanumeric and numeric codes to specific diagnoses and procedures based on physicians or qualified healthcare provider to be used on bills issued by medical providers. This system makes it easier to identify claims by displaying the patient’s entire medical history along with the services that have been performed.
A coder will take the medical provider’s notes and convert them to ICD-10-CM for diagnoses and/or ICD-10-PCS for procedures and HCPCS Level I and Level II codes that are then sent to the insurance company for payment. These various insurance companies include medical plans provided by the government such as Medicare and Medicaid.
Once received by the insurance companies, the codes are analyzed. If the coding has been accurately applied, the provider is given payment for their services.
The medical coding training received at KHIM ACADEMY, LLC and Education is a comprehensive training program with a certification process that produces medical coders who specialize in coding.

What is a Medical Coder?
One of the best recognized organization that is responsible for offering training and certification in the area of outpatient in the field of health information management medical coding is the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Once an individual has successfully passed the AAPC National Examination, they will receive the nationally recognized certification Certified Professional Coder. The AAPC is the largest organization of its kind, with over 173,000 members and growing including medical coders and auditors.
The AAPC has impressive credentials that focus on outpatient treatments including CPC certification which represents the highest level of coding expertise and the strictest of ethical standards. AAPC-credentialed coders are the coders that are preferred by both physicians and payer organizations. AAPC Certified Professional Coders offer a first-line of defense for preventing non-compliance and down-coding in the medical provider’s practice. They help to prevent legal issues and make sure that the medical providers receive their reimbursement in a timely manner.

Anatomy and Physiology
Anatomy
Anatomy is a natural science dealing with the structural organization of all living things. You will often encounter a course in gross anatomy as part of a medical school program. During such a course, you are required to attend lectures as well as participate in dissection laboratory sessions, which provide you with hands-on exposure to various biological systems and organs. Specific topics you might be introduced to include the structure of the musculoskeletal, nervous, circulatory, immune, respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems. You might also look at anatomy on a microscopic level, examining the structure of organs and tissues via their cells.
Physiology
Much like anatomy, physiology is concerned with the principal organ systems, such as the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. However, when studying physiology, you will be looking at the functions of cells and organs within their biological systems, rather than their structures. You could study physiology on a broad level, such as the physiology of mammals, during which you would study the manner in which organs function in the body of a mammal as a whole. You might also study with a narrower focus, such as the physiology of the cardiovascular system. For example, during this course, you might take a look at how the heart performs its particular function

Medical Terminology
Medical terminology is the standardized means of communication within the healthcare industry. The importance of fluency in medical terminology, which applies to all hospital personnel, including allied healthcare professionals, cannot be overstated.
Medical terminology eases clinical proceedings and enables everyone involved in the process of treatment and care to perform more efficiently for the patient’s benefit. Very often within the clinical environment, medical terminology is composed of abbreviations and understanding them makes documentation much faster and easier. ICD-10 Coding
The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Edition (ICD-10) is a clinical cataloging system that went into effect for the U.S. healthcare industry on Oct. 1, 2015, after a series of lengthy delays. Accounting for modern advances in clinical treatment and medical devices, ICD-10 codes offer many more classification options compared to those found in its predecessor, ICD-9.
The World Health Organization (WHO) owns, develops and publishes ICD codes, and national governments and other regulating bodies adopt the system.
ICD-10 purpose and uses within the healthcare industry, providers, coders, IT professionals, insurance carriers, government agencies and others use ICD codes to properly note diseases on health records, to track epidemiological trends and to assist in medical reimbursement decisions.
Why is ICD-10 important?ICD-10 codes provide more detailed information for measuring healthcare service quality, safety and efficacy. Because better data will be provided via the ICD-10 code set, it has the potential to improve the following: SAMPLE CODE BOOK

CPT Defined
CPT codes are used to describe tests, surgeries, evaluations, and any other medical procedure performed by a healthcare provider on a patient. As you might imagine, this code set is extremely large, and includes the codes for thousands upon thousands of medical procedures.
CPT codes are an integral part of the billing process. CPT codes tell the insurance payer what procedures the healthcare provider would like to be reimbursed for. As such, CPT codes work in tandem with ICD codes to create a full picture of the medical process for the payer. “This patient arrived with these symptoms (as represented by the ICD code) and we performed these procedures (represented by the CPT code).
Like ICD codes, CPT codes are also used to track important health data and measure performance and efficiency. Government agencies can use CPT codes to track the prevalence and value of certain procedures, and hospitals may use CPT codes to evaluate the efficiency and abilities of individuals or divisions within their facility.

The AAPC, or American Academy of Professional Coders, is an organization that provides training and issues certification to medical insurance coders, medical practice managers and medical auditors. Employers consider AAPC certification a mark of competence in the medical billing and business support field. Several specific types of AAPC certifications exist for medical coders, as well as separate certifications for medical auditors, compliance specialists and practice managers.
AHIMA was founded by the American College of Surgeons in 1928. Then known as the Association of Record Librarians of North America, its goal was to improve patient care by establishing clear standards for medical record-keeping. In its present role, AHIMA provides certification exams for medical coders and health information managers. Its basic credential is the Certified Coding Associate or CCA, for new coders who have graduated from a training program or spent at least six months coding. The Certified Coding Specialist certification requires graduation from a more comprehensive training program, two years' experience in the field, or a combination of the CCA or another organization's credentials plus one year of professional coding.
